Equal spaces, Equal voices: Kids as today's citizens
By Per Hultman, Frida Iversen, Vilma Jenssen & Stina Kahnberg
Children and youth represent a significant share of the urban population, but are often overlooked in the planning and design of public spaces. In Järfälla, children make up 25% of the population, but the current distribution of public space does not do this representation justice. This report not only analyzes the distribution of public space for children and youth, but also examines the importance of including children and youth's perspectives in urban planning and public space. In order to better understand their views on public space and explore how they imagine their own public spaces, a workshop was held at a youth centre.
This report advocates for 25% of public space to be dedicated to children and youth and introduces the concept of “Equal Spaces, Equal Voices”, which is based on three key pillars: Representation, Accessibility and Participation. This provides a framework ensuring kids and youth equal representation and active participation in the urban planning process.
