1-week RPL Hackathon Projects 3hp
1-week RPL Hackathon Projects 3hp
The idea behind this course is for students in the subjects studied at RPL to work together in project form to learn from each other and work on something more practical than most do in their daily research. The project should require a substantial amount of interaction between the participants, ideally be interdisciplinary and not be "more of the same and business as usual". These projects can have different characters such as
- Solve a complex tasks together
- Explore a new area together
- Combine the research of the participants in some interesting and visionary way with the aim to, for example, explore interdisciplinary areas and investigate if further research can be performed in a certain direction.
We encourage projects in all areas related to RPL such as robotics, perception, learning, HRI, planning and AI.
NOTE: Before you invest time in this you need to ask you supervisor for permission to participate. We wanted a written confirmation from the supervisor from all students participating.
NOTE: You can participate several times, again assuming you have the permission of your supervisor.
The module is divided into 3 steps
Step 1: Idea phase and team forming
In the idea phase single students, groups of students and faculty come up with project ideas. This ideas should be documented with a few sentences, pictures, or whatever is meaningful to convey the idea.
NOTE: You are encouraged to discuss your ideas with members of the faculty. It will be easier to convince the examiner if you have a backer from the faculty that vouches for your idea.
We discuss together which projects to run if there are too many suggestions. We encourage students that do not normally work together to form teams.
Step 2: Planning phase
These idea(s) from step 1 should now be turned into a project plan. The plan should explain
- what will done and
- roughly how (as in how to approach the problem if exactly how is unknown) and
- who will do what.
- The expected outcome of the project should also be described.
Step 3: Hackathon
The hackathon starts Monday morning and during a week agreed upon by all involved teams. The requirement to participate is that each team member can spend all his/her time on the during the week.
To finish off the hackathon, RPL is invited for a hackathon Bulle and we look at the result of the hackathon. Exactly what the outcome of the hackathon is depends heavily on the specific project. Some project might result in a demo, others a more solid idea, draft of a joint paper, etc.
Requirements to pass the course
To pass the require you have contributed in a fair way to step 2 and 3 in the project. That is, you do not need to be part of the idea part of the work, but you need to contribute to the planning (roughly 1hp) and the intense work during the hackathon week (roughly 2hp).
You can report the results under either Topics in Robotics or Topics in Computer Vision depending on what you worked on . This may be different for each student.
Number of students needed to run the course
- At least 2 people need to be involved in each project.
- A minimum of 4 people are required to run the hackathon.
